Blue Bottle Coffee Kobe Cafe is a minimalist space located in Hyogo, Japan, designed by Schemata Architects. The project is a Blue Bottle Coffee’s first cafe in Kobe is situated in the former foreign settlement. The settlement was built for foreigners in 1868 when Japan opened the port of Kobe to foreign countries. Many old western-style buildings still exist and there is a distinct exotic atmosphere in this area. Daimaru Department Store Kobe is located at the entrance to the foreign settlement. High fashion brand stores line up on the ground floor and upper floors are occupied by Kobe’s top companies. This building is not an old western-style building, but it is designed to look like one. Blue Bottle Coffee Kobe Cafe is located at a high-ceiling and ample store space on the ground floor, sandwiched between high fashion brand stores. The design aimed to maximize the sense of spaciousness by building a simple island-style structure where cafe functions are concentrated. They aimed to counterbalance the exotic atmosphere of the area with a simple yet distinctive element composed of divinely shining brass.

Woori is a minimal home located in Melbourne, Australia, designed by Inbetween Architecture. Located on the first floor of a 1960s apartment building in the leafy Melbourne suburb of Toorak, this apartment has canopy views and a sense of privacy rarely found in such a location. The rooms are generous, but the 1980s renovation was looking tired. The living space felt internalized despite the garden outlook and north facing position, and the floor plan was not conducive to today’s contemporary open-plan living.

Private House in Peckham is a minimalist residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Al-Jawad Pike. The project provides a new two-story rear extension to this Victorian terraced house in South London. The existing narrow kitchen extension on ground floor was remove and replaced with a new light filled kitchen and dining area. The ground floor is expanded sideways filling the entire width of the plot with reconfiguration of the existing internal layout to incorporate a washroom and generous arrival hall. Volumetrically, the ground and first floor extension is articulated into two distinct volumes constructed from a light colored pigmented concrete block, which provide a subtle distinction from the main house. The windows in this new volume are made from oak, which has also been used in the interiors.
